Chapter 16

THE TRIUMVIRATE OF SANCTUM

Kai observed the battle unfolding in the Heavenly World. At first, Otrey clearly dominated the battlefield, but the Luminari’s arrival changed the situation dramatically. It seemed that the corporation was doomed, when, suddenly, someone else joined the conflict.

A chill ran down Kai’s spine even though he was millions of miles away from the Heavenly World. Everyone in the room tensed, and the observation arrays began to malfunction as the image of the battlefield blurred and pulled away. Some unknown force was actively preventing them from seeing the newcomer.

At that moment, Kai received a message. Moving to the main transfer array, he saw a bent figure dressed in black. Though the appearance of the Shadow was deliberately changed, Kai instantly recognized Selena von Everstein. Only the wielder of the Eye of the Void could so masterfully use the Intergalactic Transfer to enter the Will of the Temple despite the spatial distortions created by the Labyrinth.

After greeting Kai, the girl handed over an artifact and a memory scroll.

“Keep the Transfer with you for now,” Kai said while he examined the scroll.

Lilith’s revival, Julie’s reappearance, Ryu’s return and immediate departure to the ATS — the scroll contained everything of importance that had occurred in the Temple during Kai’s absence.

Without showing any reaction to the contents, Kai copied the scroll and returned it.

“I sense Viola somewhere in this area. We split up in the Laboratory and left separately. Find her and bring her here.”

“As you command, Lord Sovereign.”

“When you’re done, connect the Transfer to the Will’s main transfer array and prepare to return home.”

Selena bowed and vanished.

Kai returned to the control panel. By now, the battle in the Heavenly World had ended, and what remained was the systematic eradication of Yashnir’s men who had failed to escape. Watching with only passing attention, Kai turned to the System messages he had ignored until now.

Peering into his Storage, Kai discovered two new treasures: a snow-white pill and a red amber pendant in the shape of a heart on a thin golden chain.

The pendant instantly appeared around his neck, hidden beneath his clothes, and the Elemental Expander was already in his hand. Although classified as an artifact, it was in fact an alchemical preparation. The only reason it had artifact-level properties was that ingredients and materials of this caliber simply didn’t exist in nature. All its energy fluctuations had to be artificially engineered.

Kai weighed his options. His initial plan had been to use the Expander to add Reversal to his Initial Slot — a Force belonging to the Higher Path of Time — which his Slot had interpreted as a standalone element.
